Suburbs we cover from Helensburgh down to Kiama

Three councils, one escarpment and a coastline — the rules and the trees change as you move along it.

The area, and why it is not uniform

The Illawarra is a narrow strip with an escarpment on one side and the Pacific on the other, and almost everything about tree work here follows from that geometry. In the northern suburbs the escarpment sits close enough that blocks run steeply and access is the dominant cost. Around the lake and the Dapto flats the ground is level but the clay is heavy and holds water. South of Shellharbour the coastal plain opens out and the wind exposure changes again.

Species change as you move too. Camphor laurel is everywhere as a weed, but the trees worth keeping shift — blackbutt and turpentine on the foothill slopes, Port Jackson and Moreton Bay figs through the older suburbs, cabbage tree palms and coastal banksias near the beaches, Illawarra flame trees scattered through the lot.

Suburb pages

Each of these covers the council that applies, the ground conditions, the species that come up most, and the access problems that show up on quote day.

What we do, wherever you are

The service list does not change by suburb: tree removal, lopping and pruning, stump grinding, storm and emergency work and land clearing. What changes is the method, and that is what the suburb pages are about.

If you want a sense of pricing before you call, the cost guide sets out the factors that actually move a quote. Otherwise call (02) 4214 8006 and we will arrange a look.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Which councils cover the Illawarra?

Three of them across the area we work in. Wollongong City Council runs from Helensburgh in the north down to Windang and out to Dapto. Shellharbour City Council covers Shellharbour, Albion Park, Oak Flats and Shell Cove. Kiama Municipal Council takes over south of Minnamurra. Each has its own tree controls, thresholds and application process.

Do you charge more to travel to the southern suburbs?

Not within the Illawarra. Travel is built into the day rather than added as a separate line, which is one reason we keep the coverage area tight rather than driving to Sydney or the far South Coast. Jobs beyond Berry and Gerringong are taken case by case depending on size.

My suburb is not listed — do you still come?

Almost certainly. The pages here cover the eight suburbs we get asked about most, but the crews work the whole stretch, including Bulli, Woonona, Unanderra, Port Kembla, Warrawong, Windang, Oak Flats, Gerringong and Berry. Call and ask rather than assuming.

Does the local suburb change how a job is quoted?

It changes it more than people expect. Slope, soil, dominant species, block width and which council controls the tree all move the number. A 15 metre eucalypt on a flat Dapto block and the same tree on a Thirroul hillside with no vehicle access are not the same job at all.
