The strip of land between the escarpment and the sea does unusual things to trees. Blocks in Figtree and Thirroul sit on slopes steep enough that a truck cannot get past the letterbox. Houses in Corrimal and Shellharbour cop salt-laden easterlies that thin a canopy from the seaward side. And when a southerly buster comes through, the limbs that fail are almost never the ones the owner was worried about.
South Coast Tree Lopping arranges tree removal, pruning, stump grinding and storm work across Wollongong and the Illawarra. The crews are local, which matters more than it sounds: someone who has worked under the escarpment knows that a camphor laurel with a hollow butt behaves nothing like the blackbutt three doors down, and quotes accordingly.
What we take on
Most jobs fall into one of five buckets. Whole-tree removal, where the tree comes out in sections or by crane. Lopping and pruning, where the tree stays but the risk comes down. Stump grinding after the fact. Emergency and storm damage work, which is its own discipline. And land clearing for building envelopes, fence lines and acreage that has gone to seed.
What we will not do is top a healthy tree just because it has grown taller than the neighbour likes. Topping a eucalypt produces a mass of weakly attached regrowth that fails in exactly the storm you were trying to prepare for. If that is what you have been quoted elsewhere, ask what the tree will look like in five years.
Council rules come first, not last
Three councils cover most of the area we work in, and all three protect trees. Wollongong City Council, Shellharbour City Council and Kiama Municipal Council each require written approval before you remove or substantially prune a protected tree, with exemptions for certain weed species, small trees, and genuine emergencies where a tree is an immediate risk to life or property.
That is not a detail to sort out afterwards. Cutting a protected tree without approval is an offence and the fines are real. Before we quote a removal we tell you whether the tree is likely exempt, likely protected, or a case that needs an arborist report to support an application. Species we deal with constantly
Camphor laurel is the one that comes up most. It is a declared environmental weed through the Illawarra, it grows fast, it holds water in a hollowing trunk, and it drops big limbs without much warning. Removal is often straightforward to approve.
At the other end, Port Jackson and Moreton Bay figs, Illawarra flame trees and mature blackbutts and turpentines are usually worth keeping and pruning properly. Cabbage tree palms on the northern suburbs need frond and seed-head work rather than removal. Frequently asked questions
Do I need council approval to remove a tree in Wollongong?
Usually yes. Wollongong City Council protects most trees above a modest height and trunk size, and you need written approval before removal or heavy pruning unless the species is exempt or the tree is an immediate danger. Shellharbour and Kiama councils run their own similar controls. We look at the tree, tell you which category it falls into, and quote the lodgement work if you want us to handle it.
How quickly can someone come out after a storm?
Storm calls are triaged by risk. A tree through a roof, a limb on powerlines or a trunk blocking the only driveway gets a crew the same night where it is safe to work. Lower-risk jobs, like a snapped branch hung up in the canopy with nothing underneath, are usually booked for the following day once the wind has dropped.
What happens to the branches and chip?
Timber is cut down to firewood lengths and stacked if you want it, and the rest goes through the chipper. Most Illawarra customers ask for the chip to be blown back onto their garden beds, which costs nothing extra. If you would rather it all left the property, that is a tipping cost and it goes in the quote.
Is a quote free and do I have to be home?
Quotes are free and there is no obligation. You do not need to be home for a straightforward job in an open backyard — photos and a walk-around are often enough. For steep escarpment blocks, crane jobs or anything near a boundary fence we would rather meet you on site so access and drop zones are agreed before the day.
